Bees, the small Guardians of Our Game

We love honey and the incredible work bees do during this time of year. That’s why, this month, Smart Golf Travel decided to highlight some golf courses that are evolving towards a much more environmentally friendly model. Bees are essential to our lives; nearly 90% of wild plants and 75% of global crops depend on pollination to survive. Taking care of them is, quite literally, taking care of our food security and the biodiversity of the landscapes, we enjoy so much while playing golf.
In Spain, several golf clubs have decided to be more than just a sports venue, turning themselves into true sanctuaries for bees.

  • Club de Golf Alcanada (Mallorca): In 2020, they launched their beekeeping initiative as part of their commitment to local biodiversity and sustainability. Starting with 6 hives, they now have 8, housing over 300,000 bees of the Apis mellifera species. Located near the edge of the course, about 50 meters from the sea and 1 km from the main play areas, they ensure players enjoy their game in peace while the bees remain undisturbed.

 

  • Camiral Golf & Wellness (Girona): An international benchmark in sustainability.They have reintroduced the Iberian bee to produce their own honey and combat invasive species like the Asian hornet, proving that a luxury resort can also be a nature reserve. In 2017, the resort welcomed one million Iberian black bees (Apis mellifera iberiensis), a native species that was at risk. They have 18 hives located on the southern edge of the property, near the adjacent Natural Park, and produce their own organic honey served at their 5-star hotel breakfasts.

 

  • Chaparral (Costa del Sol): Embracing this initiative since 2019, Chaparral has become a leader in environmental best practices. They take advantage of their unique location within a Mediterranean pine forest, where the variety of native flora allows bees to thrive naturally. In addition to bees, the course acts as a “green lung” for local wildlife such as squirrels, rabbits, and various birds, reinforcing a message of respect for life.
